When Karen Selinger began exploring the art of water marbling, she knew she had stumbled upon something special. Beginning as a hobby, Signature Silk Scarves was founded in July of 2017 when Karen determined she couldn’t just keep the fun all to herself!

Since then Karen has been bringing this ancient art form to the greater Edmonton area through markets, workshops, and home parties. Keep scrolling to learn more about what Signature Silk has to offer!

Signature Silk is Karen’s passion project. While having always been creative, there was never one craft that she could really sink her teeth into. When Karen came across water marbling, she knew she had found something special - mixing her love of art and creativity with her favorite fashion accessory, the scarf. Karen quickly discovered the joy water marbling can bring to people, as well as its therapeutic benefits, and created Signature Silk Scarves so all could enjoy.

LYLE sELINGER

Lyle is Karen’s husband and occasionally acts as the organizer of the operations. Lyle’s specialty is packing all the necessary materials into neat, little packages that can easily be transported to and from Karen’s destinations. Lyle has often accompanied Karen to markets because there is no place Lyle would rather be than a market when the Oiler game is on. While Lyle has little interest in art, he has occasionally put on the artist’s frock and created a few masterpieces himself.

Christine Selinger

Christine, Karen’s daughter, has served as the social media adviser and web content specialist for Signature Silk. Helping her mother out in any way at events, she has mostly played a behind-the-scenes role developing videos and web content to be shared with our lovely clients.

PRIVATE EVENTS

Workshops and Private Events are our favorite part of our business because we get to spend some quality time with you!
We truly enjoy bringing you the experience of water marbling. Got questions? Below we have our frequently asked questions answered!

“Do I need to purchase supplies? How big of a space do you need?”

If you choose to host a workshop or a private event we bring all tables, water, water trays, paint, tools, silk and supplies needed. We typically suggest a space of at least 10’x10’ in order to accommodate 2 water trays and a supply table. Additional water trays are available to accommodate larger groups if necessary.

“How do your private events work?”

We will provide instruction at the beginning of the event and will continue to coach each artist as they design their own scarf. The design will evolve as paint is applied to the water. We try to advise how the paint will react when using various tools as well as the colours interacting with each other. Our hope is that everyone will be completely satisfied with their design and will wear their scarf with pride.

“How big are the scarves?”

The scarves used in our regular private events (and our favorite to wear) are 14”x 72” and 100% silk.

“How is the scarf printed?”

Once each artist is finished designing their scarf in our water trays, a silk scarf is dropped onto the design and the paint is immediately absorbed by the scarf. Each scarf is folded wet and placed in a plastic bag along with care instructions. (No worries - the colors will not blend together).

“What is needed to book?”

For private event bookings, pricing starts at $400 which includes 10 of our signature scarves, and $40/scarf thereafter. A mileage fee may also be applied when travelling beyond the Edmonton area. This will be determined at the time of booking. A fully refundable $100 deposit may be requested to confirm your booking.

Once you decide on a date, we can tentatively book that date. As you promote your event, you will soon determine if that date is going to work. If you need to change your date, let us know as soon as possible. We will check in with you to confirm address, time, and number of guests/scarfs to prepare for event a few days prior.

“I’m Interested but I’m not artistic. Is that a problem?”

Guests who attend private scarf events will learn from each other as they will gather around to watch their friends create. Encourage your guests to bring friends along; this art form is for everyone of all ages to enjoy. No previous art experience is needed.

Some of our favorite scarves have been created by those who claim that they are not “artistic” or “creative”.

“How long does a party typically take?”

Allow 10-20 minutes per scarf to create. We need about 30 minutes to set up our tables and supplies and we’ll stay as long as needed, It usually takes 3-4 hours for a party of 10-15 scarves. Direct your guests to check out our Facebook page to watch videos of the process and get some inspiration before the party. Picking the colours is really the hardest part of the process.

“Where are you located? Will you travel?”

We are located in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Our prices are for events within the greater Edmonton area. If your event is outside the Edmonton area, we would adjust the pricing accordingly.

“This is great! When are you available?”

We’re glad you feel that way! Occasionally you will find us at public markets and art walks on weekends, Please check our website or Facebook page for public events. We always have our supplies setup at those events for anyone who is feeling creative and wants to make a scarf. We love water marbling anytime so if you have a date and time that you are looking to book, reach out to us - we will do our best to accommodate you.
